Jan and Steve Berkeley are each celebrating their 50th birthday (Jan this month and Steve in January). As many people do when reaching this milestone, they are planning a big party. But unlike most people, they are asking their friends and family to consider making a donation towards the Walk to Cure Diabetes in lieu of a gift.

The Berkeleys’ 11-year old son, Alan, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) two years ago. Since then, the whole Berkeley family has rallied behind him. The Berkeleys’ oldest son, Ray, even decided to study microbiology at UC Santa Cruz so he could help find a cure for his brother. And, the Berkeley family created a Walk team called “Alan’s Amazing Amigos.” Their team is a mix of family and friends who want to show support for Alan and the 3 million other Americans who live with type 1 diabetes.
So far, they have raised $800 and have confidence that many people will honor their birthday wishes at their celebration next week. Jan and Steve will let their guests know that the money raised at their party will go towards research to cure, better treat, and prevent T1D. Material gifts just aren’t on their minds.
“The thing about diabetes is that it puts life into perspective,” Jan says. “It makes you glad for what you have.”
Happy Birthday Jan and Steve!
