Why Walk?
More than 3 million Americans need a cure for type 1 diabetes.
They couldn’t prevent it and won’t outgrow it.
New cases are on the rise and no one knows why.
We are changing that. JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes through the support of research. The Walk to Cure Diabetes is our largest community fundraiser, bringing together nearly one million participants across the U.S. annually. In 2010, walkers raised $73 million nationally, almost half of JDRF’s total public contributions for the year!
It is also fun! The Walk draws friends, family members and coworkers together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause. Last year, walkers in the Bay Area raised nearly $2 million to fund research toward a cure. This year we hope to surpass that number. Choose from one of our four locations – each a festive venue featuring plenty of entertainment and refreshments – and join efforts with your community to make a real difference in the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes. It is a chance to take action and do something positive!

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research, including $107 million last year. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.
About Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump – each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
